There's a line out the door on Saturday mornings and half of it is people I've known twenty years. The head baker can run production without me — she proved it when I broke my wrist. I'd stay through a holiday season to hand over the wholesale accounts personally. The name should stay; the neighborhood would riot.

Anna S., owner

About the business

Full-line neighborhood bakery — morning counter trade, standing wholesale accounts with three local coffee shops, and a seasonal holiday business that sells out every year. Recipes, supplier relationships, and a trained back-of-house team all transfer.

What customers know us for

The Saturday line. People wait twenty minutes for the same three things they have bought for twenty years, and half of them know the counter staff by name.

The crew

Nine. A head baker who can run production without me, two bakers, four on the counter and two part-timers for the holidays. The head baker has been here eleven years and proved she could run it when I broke my wrist.

Why now

The bakery raised my family, and it is time. I want to watch it keep going from the customer side of the counter.

How much runs without the owner

Production runs without me. What only I do is the wholesale accounts, the ordering and the holiday planning, and I would hand those over personally through one holiday season.

Where the work comes from

Walk-in counter trade is most of it, nearly all repeat. Three coffee shops take wholesale on standing orders, about a fifth of revenue. The holiday business sells out every year without advertising.

Room to grow

Catering and online orders. We turn down office catering every month and we have never taken an order over the internet. A buyer who did either would not need a bigger kitchen.

Who Anna would hand it to

Someone who will keep the name and the head baker and stand at the counter on a Saturday. The neighborhood would notice a stranger, so I would rather sell to someone who wants to become a regular before they become the owner.

Terms Anna is open to

✓ Would consider carrying a noteThe buyer pays part of the price over time out of the business's earnings. Common at this size — and staying tied to the buyer's success can be a feature for a legacy-minded handoff.
✓ Would consider keeping a minority stakeThe seller keeps a piece of the business and stays along for part of the ride.
