The Monday after

The short version

What changes

For years, the business shaped your days. It told you when to get up, who to call and what mattered. On the Monday after, much of that is gone.

Many owners feel relief. Many also feel a sense of loss, even grief, for something they built. Both are normal, and they often arrive together.

Let the new owner lead

If you are staying on, you are now a helper, not the boss. Lesson 10.3 covers that role. If you are not staying on, resist the urge to check in, drop by or offer advice unless asked.

Honor your non-compete and your promises in the purchase agreement. Lesson 9.5 covers them.

Give your days a shape

What comes next

Some owners retire. Some start or buy another business, where their non-compete allows. Some consult, mentor, serve on boards or volunteer. There is no right answer and no deadline.

Talk to someone who has done it

Owners who have sold know what this feels like, and most are glad to talk about it. Ask your advisors to introduce you.

Take this to your own people

The questions for this topic, for your attorney, your accountant or your lender.

  1. For an owner who has already sold: "What surprised you most about the months after the sale?" Listen for: honest answers. They will help you plan.
  2. For your M&A attorney: "What exactly does my non-compete allow me to do next?" Listen for: a clear answer tied to the plans you are considering.
