I built this to be a business, not a job — the crews run their own routes and the foreman quotes most new work. I'll stay through a full season if the right person wants me to. What matters is the commercial accounts keep getting the service they've had for fifteen years.

Ray D., owner

About the business

Two-crew landscaping operation with commercial snow contracts that carry the winter. Recurring maintenance accounts are most of the summer book. Equipment is owned outright and the routes are tight — no windshield time wasted.

What customers know us for

Snow. Anyone can mow. We are the ones the property managers call at three in the morning when it is coming down, and we have never missed a contract morning.

The crew

Eleven in season, five year-round. My brother runs the snow side. Two crew leads have been with us since the second year.

Why now

We are not in a hurry. My brother and I are both in our fifties and we want to know what the road out looks like before we need it.

How much runs without the owner

The estimating is mine and the relationships with the four biggest property managers are mine. The crews run without me. Those relationships would take a season to hand over, and I would want to.

Where the work comes from

Roughly seventy percent is commercial contracts that renew every year. The rest is residential, mostly referral. The snow contracts are what make the winter.

Room to grow

Hardscape. Customers ask for patios and walls every spring and we send them elsewhere. We have the crews and the equipment; we never had the estimator.

Who Ray would hand it to

Someone who understands that the snow contracts are the business, and who will keep the two crew leads whatever else changes.

✓ Would consider carrying a noteThe buyer pays part of the price over time out of the business's earnings. Common at this size — and staying tied to the buyer's success can be a feature for a legacy-minded handoff.
